Samsung does NOT plan on releasing a HD DVD/Blu-ray combo player
The Internet has been buzzing the last few days with 'breaking news' that Samsung is going to release a combination Blu-ray/HD DVD player. (link to our post) Sounds good right? Well, we are sorry to inform you that Samsung has no current plans to release such a device. None, what so ever. We contacted Samsung Electronics America's PR department this morning after this story was on Digg's front page. A rep was very happy to talk to us and indicated that, yes, it is just a rumor. She provided us with this statement from a few days back.Samsung Electronics is fully committed to the Blu-ray format and currently only has plans to introduce a Blu-ray player to the market.
While it would be great to have a dual format player, do not expect one soon. Eventually, we will probably see one if both formats are successful. However, if one format dominates over the other, then we may never have a need for a combo.

Well Samsung may not produce a combo player, but LG will. When I was in an Audio store last week a LG rep told us that LG had a release date of Oct. for it's combo player, price he quoted $1200 and it plays CDs to.He seemed to be sure of it and had a few details like dual lasers etc.

Frankly I'm so disgusted with Samsung right now they better hope I don't take a liking to another DLP 50" HDTV by next year.
I don't care if they support Blu-Ray exclusively or not but a well run company shouldn't have such a foggy message being released.
Jihn that's interesting news. I'd love to see LG produce a player. I actually trust LG optical drives more than Samsung but Samsung's tvs are right up there with Panny and Sony.

I don't care if Samsung releases a universal player or not. I just would like someone to offer it and do so with 1080P unscaled output.

All 1080p outputs are scaled. You're video is in progressive 24 frames and there's nary a tv that'll accept 24p input so scaling a fact of life here.

Any 'dual format' player would have to have two lasers. One Red, One Blue... sounds expensive and prone to failure to me...
I'm sitting this war out. 480p looks pretty good on my Samsung 50" DLP... but I spend most of my time watching HDTV or Xbox 360 in 720p/1080i.

A combo player would blow me away!
